Vietnam is a country that is located in the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia and it is officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Vietnam is surrounded with China in the north, Laos in the northwest, with Cambodia in the southwest, and with South China Sea also known as the East Sea in the east. Vietnam is a strip of land shaped like the letter “S”. There are nearly 86 million people living in Vietnam. Vietnam is the 13th highest populated country in the world. The capital of Vietnam is Hanoi.
The people of Vietnam got their independence and separated from China in 938 AD after they won the battle of Bach Dang River. During the mid 19th century Vietnam was occupied by the French. The people of Vietnam took a lot of pain to oppose the French which ultimately ended in their eviction from the country in the mid-20th century, leaving the nation divided politically into two countries. Fighting between the two sides continued during the Vietnam War, ending with a North Vietnamese victory in 1975.
Vietnam’s total length from north to south is 1,650km. Its width from east to west is 600km at the widest point in the north, 400km in the south, and 50km at the narrowest part, in the centre, in Quang Binh Province. The coastline is 3,260km long and the inland border is 4,510km. Vietnam’s territory is divided into three quarters which consists of mountains and hills and it is also divided into 63 provinces and cities.
The language spoken by the people in Vietnam is Vietnamese and the other languages that are spoken in Vietnam are English, French, Chinese, Russian and German.
